San Javier Basecamp: Sierra de la Giganta

San Javier Basecamp: Sierra de la Giganta

Garden scene with flowering plants, including red and pink bougainvillea, to the right of trees with tall trunks, overlooking a windmill in the background during sunset.

Enjoy life at a slower pace with the San Javier Basecamp - we camp at or near a local ranch and spend days exploring, among other sights, the pride of the señoras at the mountain ranches: the flower gardens.

This trip is a chance to experience the ranch culture and natural beauty of the Sierra de la Giganta. Days are spent riding mule trails that wind through canyons, ridges, and desert gardens, visiting small ranches and the historic mission village of San Javier. Along the way, we share meals with local families, learn about the region’s history and traditions, and enjoy the quiet rhythm of mountain life. Some rides take us through blooming oases or along little-used dirt roads; evenings back at our basecamp bring campfire dinners, the sounds of the desert, and a starry sky or moonlight evenings.
