The Santa Teresa canyon is home to some of the most iconic rock art panels in the Sierra. This route follows mule trails down into the heart of the canyon, where towering figures stretch across cave walls. A classic trek for those wanting a balance of riding, camping, and time at the sites.
This trip is perfect for travelers with an interest in exploring the best of both worlds: ancient rock art in a rugged and remote setting coupled with visits to old ranches, and their orchards, where you can explore an older and slower way of living.
The loop route links the canyons of Santa Teresa and San Gregorio, creating a circuit through ranch country and rock art sites. It’s a longer trip that gives a wide perspective of the Sierra — from canyon bottoms to high overlooks — with plenty of time at the paintings along the way.
For slightly more experienced riders and adventurous spirits, the Parral Canyon trail (ridden as a shorter in and out, or as a loop) dives into some of the most remote and dramatic country in the Sierra. This challenging route rewards you with solitude, rugged scenery, and rarely visited painted caves, like La Serpiente, a unique and magical painting.
