El Camino Real: Sierra de la Giganta

El Camino Real: Sierra de la Giganta

An old stone church with a bell tower, surrounded by orange trees and a stone wall, under a clear blue sky.

This journey follows sections of El Camino Real, the historic trail that once connected the peninsula’s Jesuit missions. We travel by mule and burro caravan through the Sierra de la Giganta, camping at small ranches and along desert trails.

Each day brings a mix of history, ranch life, and wilderness travel — from tending animals and learning vaquero skills to sharing meals and stories around the fire. We pass through quiet canyons, volcanic ridges, and desert mesas, visiting oasis pools and remote ranch sites still used by local herders. The route ends - or starts - in the twin villages of Comondú, where colonial-era adobe homes and sugarcane gardens give a glimpse of life as it’s been lived here for generations. After exploring the village and its traditions, we return to Loreto with a new appreciation for the people, animals, and trails that have shaped this land.
